My husband has been an addict to almost every drug there is out there. With my help he has kicked everything but ambien. He says he has sleep issues but what I see is that this is his last vestiage of having a drug he can have fun with. He gets 57 pills, takes about 11 the first day and continues on until he has used them all up within a seven to ten day period and then can't sleep and so he takes my prescription when I get it and uses it up within four to five days. I get 30 pills which I don't take. I realize he has a sleep issue and oh, did I mention he is a drug and alcohol counselor and always tries to justify his position by his need for sleep. I am at my wits end with this and it has been going on since I met him in 2000. What to do???

Stop filling your prescription and cancel it with your doctor. Have you asked him to be honest and tell you what he would tell a client in the same position? There is no reason on earth that anyone should take 11 pills a day-I suppose you can threaten, but I am not sure that would cause anything more than a fight. As you well know, you cannot force him to admit that he has a problem, would joint counseling be out of the question?

Wow, taking that many ambien? Your husbands ambien abuse needs to be addressed. Pychiatrists and therapists alike admit to seeking help with mental health issues. I agree with CK and dont refill your prescription or put them under lock and key.

My sister took way beyond a normal dose of ambien, woke up, put her jeans on backwards and got in her truck to go get cigarettes and crashed. No one got hurt only property damage but it could have been a lot worse. Thing is, SHE DID NOT REMEMBER THE WHOLE INCIDENT!!! The side effects are clearly labeled.

So, not only is this drug abuse dangerous to a persons health but can also put other innocent people in harms way.

Seek assistance asap.

OMG.......my husband was on them 1 everynight for 3 weeks and ended his life on the 4th week.......because I called the doctor and he said take him off......he became confused, paranoid...........he never had a problem in his whole life and this particular job bothered him a lot and he could not sleep........he was a man that had everything to live for and was on top of the world..........those pills that are known as the "Devil's Asprin" are horrible. You can do nothing but enter a class action law suit.....we currently have a law suit against the doctor who gave him a larger dose than he should have...........my life is over........he took me with him and I am just left with this body..............he had no idea what he was doing........

Thanks for sharing this-technically if some one takes a lot of sleeping pills, it would suggest that his blood chemistry is so much messed up that smaller doses don't work.
Make sure that a) he doesn't drink ANY coffee or soda containing caffeine after 2 PM (actually eliminate caffeine), b) that he exercises regularly but not before going to bed, c) that he eats a proper meal at least an hours before bed time, d) does not drink alcohol with ambien, e) does not watch any action TV that would keep him excited, f) does not have any underlying metabolic diseases (including diabetes and thyroid problems), f) gets adequate sun exposure, g) the room/bed etc are comfortable, encourage him to read and drink a glass of warm milk before going to bed.
If someone takes several ambiens and still does not fall asleep, it is unlikely that he "likes" it, but finds it difficult to fall asleep even after that many.
Just curious-Is he able to sleep in a hotel during travel?

More then one is pretty potent. Maybe makng a video of him staggering to the bathroom might help him with the denial. A sleep study might provide more information. He might be getting more sleep then he realize or there may be an underlying medical/biological contributing to the problem. If he does decide to stop taking ambien, it's important that he do it under a knowledgeable doctor's supervision. Best of luck finding peace for yourself, and congratulations to your husband for his almost sobriety.

Namaste, Ann
